What is Cal Animage?

Cal Animage is UCSD’s Japanese Animation club.

Why use the name Cal Animage Beta?

Cal Animage Beta was the original name used when the club was founded in 1990. Cal refers to California and Berkeley, Animage refers to a popular anime magazine in Japan, and Beta designates us the second UC anime club chapter. UCSD’s anime club was established in the same year as UC Berkeley’s anime club.

Why use the word ‘anime’?

Anime means ‘animation’ in Japanese. Having no such term of their own, the Japanese adopted this word from French. By this logic, Powerpuff Girls and Disney-animated works also technically count as anime, though in the US the term anime is commonly used in the context of Japanese animation only.

What does Cal Animage do?

We hold free anime showings on the UCSD campus every week of the normal school season, except during finals. Our showings are always on a big screen, in either a theater or a large lecture hall. We also try to organize anime film showings at the Price Center Theater at least once every quarter.

In addition to the weekly screenings, Cal Animage maintains an office in the Old Student Center with a fairly extensive library where members can rent AVIs, DVDs, and tapes of unlicenced anime series. Contact us if you’re interested in checking stuff out!
